San Diego Catering – Organic Catering for Sporting Events

The annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon took place in San Diego on May 21, 2009. Featuring hundreds of runners and a full 26.6 mile marathon, it is always an outstanding success with Eco Caters being one of the major sponsors representing San Diego catering. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon is trying to be as green as possible and using organic catering is just one step they have taken in that direction. The VIP dinner took place in the San Diego Hall of Champions and featured an exquisite organic catered menu including tray passed hors d’oeuvres, three different food stations with an assortment of beef, fish and vegetarian main dishes; dessert and fresh coffee. The hors d’oeuvres consisted of fresh cucumber cups with mango, chili, preserve lemon and chive, spicy apricot chicken skewers with marjoram red pepper yogurt and a delicate seared ahi with orange and grapefruit slaw.
The first station had a rustic italian braised beef brisket with a fresh spinach salad featuring an apple cider vinaigrette and green beans. The second stations featured a pan seared pacific fish with crispy capers, lemon cous cous and broccolini. The vegetarian station consisted of a grilled vegetable polenta lasagna with house made ricotta and mixed greens. The night ended with a delicious dessert of apple cobbler with freshly made whipped cream and hot, organic, fair trade coffee and tea.
Eco Caters has been a major sponsor of the Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon for 2 years now because of our offering of fresh organic catering. Organic food, health and athletics all tie in very well together so this should be a lasting relationship for future events to come. This event helped us make our mark in the San Diego catering world, and many athletic organizations have been attracted to the idea of how healthy we are.
Eco Caters sources fresh fish, shrimp, and other fresh seafood products from Pacific Shellfish. From Baja California to the northwest, to Alaska and beyond, ethical fishermen who make their living from the sea and follow the letter of the law, still exist. Pacific Shellfish supports local artisanal fisherman that find ways to fish which support healthy marine life, sustain local economies and provide local tasty food. We like Pacific Shellfish because of the quality of seafood that they stand behind and because of their dedication to sustainability that sets them apart from other seafood purveyors.
You can taste their seafood for yourself at their restaurant and retail fish market in Pacific Beach called The Fishery. Here you can go in and buy fresh fish to go or you can sit down for a nice meal. They often have good deals on locally caught fish such as Yellowtail when they are in season. Behind the restaurant is Pacific Shellfish, the wholesale operation, where we get much of our seafood. We guarantee you will not be disappointed if you go in and try their seafood for yourself. You can learn more about them and get directions at www.thefishery.com.
Aptera – The Electric Car of the Future – Organic San Diego Catering from Eco Caters

No, this is not a picture of a car or flying transportation device from a “futuristic” movie. This is an new age car built by Aptera – a San Diego based company. It is an aerodynamic car that weights half of an average vehicle, and can stand the weight of two elephants. The car can be plugged into a standard garage outlet and fit up to two people. As if being gas and energy efficient weren’t enough, the Aptera’s seats and carpet are made out of old plastic bottles and cups as well as use natural dyes. It is immensly stable, agile, and even has doors that open up, saving as much space as possible. So being the green car company that they are they needed organic food for their launch party and they found us to do their San Diego catering.
We were called on to cater their launch party in Balboa Park with all organic hors d’oeuvres for 800 very interested and hungry guests. The menu was thai chicken skewers with marjoram yogurt dip with free range chicken from Jidori in Los Angeles, cheese display featuring humboldt fog cheese, beemster aged gouda and gorgonzola with some homemade preserves and veggie crudite with veggies from local farms including Sage Mountain Farms. Everyone enjoyed the food very much, in fact so much that every bit of it got eaten! We are not just a San Diego catering company either, we also have an office and kitchen in Los Angeles to suite your needs from the San Diego coast all the way up to LA.

Eco Caters sponsored the Green Premier Party on Saint Patties Day at the New Children’s Museum in San Diego. The organic catering we provided consisted of 3 of our signature hors d’oeuvres including seafood sausage with shrimp, scallops and local halibut, cucumber cups with mango, preserve lemon, chili powder and lime as well as a spicy black bean and watercress and cilantro bisque shooter with a freshly made corn tortilla strip. All of the produce came from local farmers including the persian cucumbers from Beylik Farms, the cream from Strauss Family Creamery and the Seafood all from local purveyors. The oil used to fry the chips was given to Wherever Limousine service to power their biodiesel limo, the only eco-friendly limo service in San Diego. Everyone at the event was very green minded so the organic catering menu went over very well.
We did a promotional spot for the event on KUSI news in the morning and talked a bit about our food and the event. You can find the video at http://www.kusi.com/news/goodmorning/41400602.html
The event went very well and everybody enjoyed our food. We hope to do more events at the Children’s Museum in the future should they need our organic catering services.
You have to check out this 60 minutes special with Alice Waters. She is an amazing chef and is doing great things for organic whole foods. 60 Minutes Special
Alice Waters has been an inspiration to the American sustainable foods movement. She is all about using real, local foods to create delicious cuisine. She is responsible for stating the Slow Foods movement to which many Americans have caught on going to local chapter networking events. You can find out more about the San Diego two chapters of Slow Foods at http://www.slowfoodurbansandiego.org/ and http://www.slowfoodsandiego.org/. Alice Waters has also been very instrumental in gardening and sustainable foods education. She is responsible for the organic garden in front of the capitol in San Francisco and I believe she was also involved with the organic garden that has been planted in front of the White House. We have been very influenced by Alice Waters cooking and we think it might show a bit in our cuisine.
On September 27th, 2008 we did a one of a kind event called the Wellderly Social in San Diego. Hundreds of healthy elderly men and women who donated their time and blood, for a good cause to Scripps Research Center, were rewarded with an invitation to this thank you event. The Eco Caters’ staff dressed up in 40’s and 50’s style attire to create the ambiance of old school service. Organic Roy Rogers and Shirley Temple beverages were served from the bar while fresh cooked sliders with organic free range beef, shrimp pipettes, beggars purses and more were passed on trays by the staff. Our miniature burgers, or sliders, were the biggest hit with the guests – made with grass fed beef, blue cheese and caramelized onions on a fresh baked organic slider roll. The band, consisting of all throw back band members, provided great entertainment. On the black and white checkered dance floor, the research participants danced the afternoon away. Everyone seemed to be extremely enjoying the band, excited about the food, enthusiastic about the dress of the staff and happy to have been a part of this good cause. Eco Caters is also thrilled about being given the opportunity to serve these wonderful people.
Eco Caters is always excited to cater events that are laid back and for a good cause. The guests at this event were very deserving of a treat and it came in the form of delicious organic catering from local San Diego farms.
On Spetember 13 Eco Caters brought a taste of Eco Caters to the Quail Botanical Gardens, one of San Diego’s premier eco-friendly venues, yearly fundraiser – the Gala in the Gardens. The event is Quail’s major fundraiser for the year. We are one of Quail’s top caterers because of our dedication to the environment and serving healthy organic food. You can find out more info about Quail at http://www.qbgardens.org/. We recommend their beautiful space for your next green event or for any event in which you looking for a scenic floral backdrop.
On the menu were 2 organic raw vegan hors de oeuvres and one seafood option. We served fresh cucumber cups with mango, jicama, lime and chili powder which is always a big hit at every event. Next we had some organic cherry tomatoes from Tutti Fruitti farms stuffed with raw cashew cheese. This was great to give everyone a little taste of something different and to satisfy the raw vegans in the crowd. Finally we served up our signature hors de oeuvre – seafood sausage with homemade spicy mustard and radish sprouts. This is made with shrimp, scallops and dover sole and served on a water cracker.
The event went very well. Everyone enjoyed our fresh, organic food and a lot of people signed up to receive our monthly recipe email. If you are interested in getting our monthly organic recipe please send us an email at info@ecocaters.com and we will add you to the list.
Quail Gardens and Eco Caters have formed quite a nice partnership over the past 2 years and we will continue to provide organic catering to the clients who are looking for great tasting cuisine for their next event at Quail.
Eco Caters teamed up with Elite Racing to provide hundreds of elite athletes, their families, VIP sponsors and other marathon personnel 100% organic cuisine following the 11th annual Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon in San Diego, California. We were able to provide environmentally sustainable catering services by utilizing biodegradable and compostable plates, forks, knives and napkins as well as presenting an entirely organic and seasonally fresh menu. We also bought the majority of our products from local farms, who we partner with for both sustainable agricultural goals and to espouse the benefits of organic edibles.
Our menu for the event consisted of a California cheese board coupled with fresh organic fruits and organic pickled and fermented vegetables. The main course included organic truffled potato puree, sautéed market vegetables, spinach stuffed wild Sole and free range organic chicken breast. The organic cuisine was served throughout a post race benefit concert headlined by Pat Benatar. Both Eco Caters and Elite Racing are excited about this new-found friendship, which will aid Green Earth causes and make the Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon an even bigger and greener event in the future.
