This company also really cares about the environment, which makes them all the more special. Here are some special things Straus does to protect our environment, the cows and us!
1 – They use No Hormones or Antibiotics; Treating cows with hormones, including Bovine Growth Hormone, rBGH, is strictly forbidden by organic law. They do not treat their cows with antibiotics; when necessary, they utilize homeopathy and aspirin.
2 – They have Certified Organic Land and Feed; They do not use any herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers, period! They haven’t used any since the 1980s, way before they turned organic.
3 – Environmentally Safe Plant; They work hard to conserve water, recycle wherever possible and strictly avoid using environmentally detrimental chemicals. They use hydrogen peroxide as a sanitizer as it leaves no chemical residues.
4 – Organic Certification; All products are produced in accordance with USDA Organic Regulations and are third-party certified by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF).
5 – Natural Pest Control: They have been using an electric-powered bug zapper which the cows walk under as they enter the barn to be milked. A solar-powered zapper is used near covered drinking troughs out in the fields.
